HOW CAN A PERSON BE BORN AGAIN?

1. Salvation is received, not achieved
“The greatest enemy to human souls is the self-righteous spirit which makes men look to themselves for salvation.” Charles Spurgeon
2. You must be born again by the Holy Spirit
3. Salvation is available because of God’s indescribable love
“Christ had to die before men could be born again; His death brings life. When spiritually dead sinners trust Jesus Christ, they move from death to life. What a paradox!" - Warren Wiersbe
To be born again is to be radically transformed at a heart level by the Spirit of God.

Dig Deeper

Read John 3:1-2
1. What do we know about Nicodemas, according to these verses?
2. What did it mean that he was a Pharisee?
3. Why did he come to see Jesus? Why did he come at night?
4. Jesus’ miracles are what confirmed Jesus’ anointing to Nicodemus. What about Jesus has confirmed your belief in Him as God?

Read John 3:3-15
5. How might you summarize Jesus' response in verse 3? Does it seem weird at first? What does the image of birth convey?
6. What did Jesus mean by, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” John 3:5

Two key phrases are used in describing the salvation that God offers us through Jesus: “born again” and “eternal life.” Being “born again” (3:3) infers that at the moment of salvation, a person is spiritually a brand-new person. Other terms that we read in scripture to describe this is “regeneration” and “renewal” (Titus 3:5). So, our salvation is not just getting saved from an eternity in hell, but it is also signifying a complete transformation of who we are (2 Corinthians 5:17 and Ezekiel 36:26).

7. In what ways could you be trying to cling to your own efforts for salvation, rather than looking to Christ?
8. What evidence will exist in the life of a person who has been born again?
9. Why are Jesus’ words to Nicodemus a message of hope to sinners?

Read and Discuss John 3:16-21
10. What are we to believe about Jesus from this passage?
11. How would you describe Jesus to someone who has never heard of Him?
12. In what ways might John 3:16 change how you view and respond to sin in your life?
13. Read John 3:17. According to this passage, Jesus did not come to condemn the world? But how do those who reject Jesus end up? Why do some Christians condemn the world, even though Jesus Himself said that he did not come to condemn? How can you show more love rather than condemnation?
14. Read John 3:19. What does the light in verse 19 represent? How many times is Jesus called "the light" in this passage? What do verses 20-21 mean?
15. Why do people love darkness more than the light? What is it that pulls people out of the darkness into the light?
16. How has the gift of Jesus changed both your life and your eternity?
