What we believe about sin shapes what we believe about the savior.
What we believe about sin shapes what we believe about the savior.
We have two key problems: Our sin & our understanding of our sin.
Do you fear God?
The fear of God is the convergence of respect, awe, adoration, worship, & submission to God. It is a fear that comes from a healthy understanding of God’s love AND God’s wrath.

Original Sin — our fallen, sinful nature. Inherent.
We are not sinners because we sin; we sin because we are sinners.
Actual Sin — our guilt before God. Our right standing before God has been ruined & we are under His judgement.
Original Sin — God remedies through justification in Christ. Instant! This is called Salvation. (Romans 6:20-23; 7:14-15; 8:8-15; Ephesians 1:5)
Actual Sin — God remedies through sanctification by the Holy Spirit. Not instant, rather a life long process of repentance & growing in the grace & knowledge of our Lord (2 Peter 3:18)
Jesus did not come to make bad people good or good people better…He came to make dead people live!

Start Talking
Find a conversation starter for your group.
• When you think of a villain, what comes to mind? What are the attributes of a good villain?

Start Thinking
Ask a question to get your group thinking.
• What are some euphemisms people use today for sin (e.g. “white lies”)? Why do you think people use them? Do you ever hear the word “sin” used outside of the church?
• How have you seen the effects and/or consequences of sin in your own life or in your family history?

Start Sharing
Choose a question to create openness.
• What thoughts/ideas/images first come to mind when you hear the word “repent?”
• Share a time in your life when you remember making a conscious decision to turn away from something you knew was wrong and you choosing a different way instead.
• Few of us find “guilt” or “fear of punishment” to be very good motivators for anything. What could be a different motivator for us to stop making choices that lead to sin?

Start Praying
Be bold and pray with power.
• God, we believe You are good. Thank You for providing the way for us to be made right with You through Jesus Christ. Thank You for access to You and Your love and grace forever. Inspire us to love everyone we can with Your practical grace and truth that promises eternal life. In Jesus' name, Amen!

Start Doing
Commit to take a bold step of faith this week and make it practical!
• This week, think about what a difference a new understanding of sin could mean to you. Is there something in your life right now that God is calling you to confess and seek forgiveness for? If so, start by confessing it to God (today!) and thanking Him for His forgiveness (see 1 John 1:9).
