What Does Jesus’s First Miracle Teach Us?

1. Make sure Jesus is on the invitation list
“To run out of supplies would be a dreadful embarrassment in a ‘shame’ culture; there is some evidence it could also lay the groom open to a lawsuit from aggrieved relatives of the bride.” – D.A. Carson
Wine was a symbol of joy and blessing
2. Do whatever Jesus tells you to do!
3. Jesus makes all things new
"He attends the wedding, participates in the happiness, averts disaster, and then supplies the joy!" – Kent Hughes
Jesus has the power to transform people’s lives.

Dig Deeper
1. Can you name any of Jesus's miracles from the Bible? If you could be there to see one, which would you choose?

Read John 2:1-5
2. What can we learn from the fact that Jesus was often invited to parties?
3. What did Jesus mean by "My hour has not yet come" in verse 4?

Read John 2:6-10
4. How is wine viewed positively in the Bible? Or negatively? See Psalm 104:15, Proverbs 20:1, Ephesians 5:18.
5. How is Jesus turning the water into wine a foreshadowing of Him shedding His own blood for our purification?

Read John 2:11-12
6. How does this miracle add validity to the authenticity of the Bible?
7. Considering John 2:11, how important is the presence of the miraculous for you to believe in Jesus?
8. Jesus knew the life He was calling His disciples to, though they couldn’t comprehend it. What can we learn from this?
9. Discuss how you came to know and follow Jesus Christ. Was it a person, even a family member, who shared with you? Was it a Bible study or a sermon? Was it a circumstance? Was it a combination?
10. How does this miracle in John 2 point to the greater marriage supper of the Lamb? See Revelation 19:6-9.
11. In what area of your life are you needing a miracle? Start with prayer and continue with obedience.
