Hear His Voice

Hear His Voice

Do you want more grace in your life? Things like kindness, beauty, generosity, forgiveness? Author David Mathis explains that tapping into grace is like getting a refreshing drink of water. We can turn on the faucet, but we're not the source of the water. Similarly, God has designed rhythms and habits of life that can connect us to the flow of His grace, but we're not the source of the grace. In Mathis's (very readable!) book "Habits of Grace," he groups these practices/disciplines into three categories: Hear His Voice (Word), Have His Ear (prayer), and Belong to His Body (fellowship, or community). Each week we'll explore a habit or two under each heading, as we seek a greater experience of God's grace in our lives.

Treasuring God: Read 2 Tim. 3:16-17. What do you think is meant by the phrase “God breathed”? Why is that important?

Being Transformed: Looking at 2 Tim. 3:16-17, what roles does Scripture play in our life? How does that influence how we approach Scripture? When you are making decisions, where do you go to help make your decisions? How do we use Scripture to shape our decisions?

Pursuing Unity/Loving Others: What role should Scripture play in our relationship with others? How could we use it to encourage or correct a brother/sister in Christ? If there is a disagreement with a brother/sister in Christ, how should we approach resolving it?

Next Week's Sermon

As we continue our Habits of Grace series, we'll turn our attention from hearing God's voice through his Word to having his ear in prayer. So much has been written concerning the topic of prayer, but we'll explore practical ways that we can confidently and boldly approach God's throne of grace through prayer to receive help in our time of need. We'll explore ways that we can deepen our personal and public prayer lives as we delight in the fact that, through Jesus, we have the ear of God and can call out to him whenever!
