What is your favorite thing do to in the fall season? Is there something you could do together as a group this fall?
When you think about being formed by culture vs. being formed by Christ, what in culture do you think has the biggest influence over your thoughts, feelings, actions? Why? If you feel this is a negative influence, is there a change you could make for the next 30 days?
Read Matt. 6:1-4. Pastor Dan shared that Jesus is focused on the purpose, not the practice of giving to the poor. Is it possible to pray for your enemies and have no reward? Is it possible to preach like an angel and have no reward? It is possible to give to charity and have no reward...in light of this passage Why?
Read Matt. 6:19-24. Jesus wasn’t condemning savings or providing for your family, scripture speaks to the need for these (see/read Prov. Proverbs 6:6–8 and 1 Timothy 5:8), Jesus was again focusing on the intention of our “storing” treasure on earth or in heaven. Dan said earthly treasure is motivated by fear and appetites. Which of these do you struggle with more? Dan said treasure in heaven is motivated by trust and satisfaction in what you have. What is God saying to you as you look at these concepts again?
How we use our resources says; More about us than the receiver. Where we place our values. Where we place our trust. Do you agree, why or why not? What stood out to you, how are you being challenged to use your resources?
Dan shared that Jesus’ questions in Matt. 6 surrounding the shape of our money are; "Are you doing all I would have you do with what I have given you? Are you doing it for me, rather than you? Reflect and discuss.
