Close enough to see the flame. Far enough away to not feel the warmth.
The writer spends time making the case for Jesus to be far superior than the 1) angels (1:4), 2) Moses (3:3), 3) Aaron (5:6) and 4) even Abraham (5:6).
Three leadership roles in Israel:
Prophet - represents God (Yahweh) to the people.King - orders the life of the nation.Priest - represents the people to God.
Melchizedek had a unique role that is captured in Genesis 14:
17 After his (Abraham’s) return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. 19 He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; 20  and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything.
Melchizedek, whose name means righteousness and is both priest of God. He is also the king of Salem which means peace. He precedes the Aaronic line of priests before the law was given. And, here is the kicker, he has no beginning or end. No human lineage from which place him.
Psalm 110 records an “oath” from God that flows from this king/high priest Melchizedek:
The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
Making of Jesus who is the eternal king/priest who brings righteousness and peace.
