Church on a Mission - Week 4 - Salvation requires revenants and sacrifice.
We are continuing our series church on mission.
Last week we looked at the 2nd chapter in Philippians and realized this: Humility defines a Christian life
This week we dive into the second of half of Chapter 2 in Philippians.
If we were to say what is causing the world to separate from one another what would it be?
Politics, War, World-views, sports teams. the truth is though all of these things in and of themselves aren’t evil. They just symbolize one thing conflict and we get in conflict over some
ridiculous things; dogs vs cats, TP over or under, what color is the dress (blue).These are fun but how often do you see people get into the most ridiculous fights over something as simple as dress color. If you don’t believe watch Bridezilla.
Well if we are going to be a church on mission we have to be focused and believe me it’s not supposed to be focused on one of the debates we just had. We have to be focused and one of the things we have to focus on is what Paul rights next.
Philippians 2:10-11 So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
—Recognize Jesus is King
Philippians 2:12-13 my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
—God provides salvation
—We have to continually grow in salvation with fear and trembling.
—Do it knowing that it cost Jesus his life
Often we walk around not thinking about or considering what it took. There should be some fear in us if we would so flippantly not consider our faith seriously. God works in you and through you, you can’t do anything for salvation
—What must we do if we have our salvation?
14-15 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent
—Stop finding everything wrong in the world
—You ever been around the person that finds something wrong in everything you do.
—Husbands and wives don’t point at each other.
—Honey I mowed the lawn, you missed a spot
—I painted the room, you got some on the ceiling
—I made dinner for you, you overcooked the noodles
—I cleaned the house, did you take out the trash
—I put the kids to bed, but did you get their clothes ready for bed
Why try?
When your less critical people are less critical with you
15 children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
—Be a light not live in darkness
Jesus in Matthew 5:14-16 talks about being a light:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
—Do good things and have them thank God
—Why do you do what your doing? I’m a disciple of Jesus doing good in his name
—When your working in light it’s hard to get corrupted by darkness
Philippians 2:16-17 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
