Out of the Depths

Out of the Depths

Since it is true that we cannot have spiritual maturity without emotional health, it is crucial that we know ourselves. It's important to know what's going on inside us as we navigate life. It is in that reality that God meets us. It is in those places, even the unpleasant and messed up places, that we come to experience the love and goodness of God. Take courage and join with us in 'going deep' so that God's healing presence touches everything.

Discussion and Application Questions for Group Life Communities and Personal Study- Psalm 130

Spiritual maturity is linked with our emotional health. Consider how you might integrate the spiritual and emotional dimensions of your life.

Observe – Read the passages several times, slowly, paying attention to the words, the repetition and the main ideas of the scriptures. What words or ideas capture your attention? Where are words repeated? What new insights for you are in the psalm?

Interpret

- How does this psalm invite us to 'know ourselves that we may know God?'

- What about this psalm promotes emotional health and spiritual maturity in the follower of Jesus?

- What do you think is the meaning of 'full redemption' in verse 7?

Apply

- Where are you crying out to God 'from the depths?' Do you find it challenging to do this? What is your normal tendency?

- How could feelings of 'desolation' (see page 48 in Emotionally Healthy Spirituality) help trigger for you honest and open prayer to God?

- What would you like to give yourself to 'practicing' this week that helps you copy the behavior of Psalm 130 and live in the hope that is offered?

- Pray for each other fervently this week, and for the entire church.

Thank you for continuing to take an interest in the people in your group. How can you follow up with group members this week? How can you pray for them?
This week let’s pray for each other that we may experience the victory of Jesus in the midst of our daily challenges.

Remember:

Four Principles for Living the Missio Dei:
*Share in life with people who do not yet know Jesus.
*Inspire others to know and follow Jesus by living your faith attractively.
*Grow with others in your faith and obedience.
*Serve others with sacrificial love.
