PRAY LIKE JESUS: 3 September 15, 2021


SCRIPTURE

GIVE US…

Jesus breaks the Lord’s Prayer into two parts: the Greatest Commandment.



THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD…

In this prayer, “bread” may be viewed in a number of ways.

Bread could be related to the Lord’s Supper.

Bread could be related to Christ’s presence.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35, ESV

Bread could be related to Scripture.

“’Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4, ESV

Bread could be related to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

None of these are necessarily wrong, but to make it practical for prayer.

Bread could be related to our daily provision.



1/ It is a reminder that God provides our daily needs.

Jesus’ audience would have instantly connected this prayer to the children of Israel receiving manna in the wilderness.

“If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.” Exodus 16:3, NLT

(After the quail) …in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey. Exodus 16:13-14, 31, NIV

This is not a poverty-orientated prayer, but a provision-oriented prayer!


2/ It is a reminder to focus on today.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6, NIV

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:25, NIV


3/ It is a reminder that we have nothing without our Lord.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. James 1:17, ESV

He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together. Colossians 1:17, NLT

This doesn’t eliminate our need to work. The manna still had to be collected and cooked.


4/ It is a reminder to be content in all things.

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Philippians 4:12-13, NIV

It was a blessing and a testing.
5/ It is a reminder that God cares for our needs.

…your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Matthew 6:8, ESV

As Father, He will surely provide all we need! As children, we often do not know what we need versus what we want.
