SERMON NOTES
John 6:60–71 — A Very Difficult Statement

1. The Wind-up
v60 (NASB), “This is a difficult statement, who can listen to it?”
What makes a passage difficult?

2. The Pitch: Future Glory is Our Mind’s Focus
vv61–62, “…behold the Son of Man ascending to where he was before.” See Daniel 7:13–14 & Hebrews 12:2.

3. Foreknowledge and Predestination
Verses 63–66, “words of spirit and life” are words that take effect in a person…change a person. How is this so?
See John 6:29, 37–40, 44–45. And pointing back even further to John 1:18, 3:7–8, 18–21. And John 10:25–29 ahead of us.

4. “To whom shall we go?”
Verses 67–71, those who hear with spirit-filled ears know the place they are going. The words are giving eternal life in such ears!

See Job 42:2, God’s will cannot be thwarted. Revelation 17:17. Just as well, Romans 9:11; Isaiah 46:8–13 (as declared again to us in Ephesians 1:11); John 10:25–29; Ephesians 1:1a, 4–11.

What is the “lie of loneliness”?

How does the mystery of a sovereign God affect my daily life and my spiritual health?
Questions for Further Discussion:
· What is your current understanding of God’s sovereignty and your will?

· God created time; what does that say about his interaction in time?

· How does the Holy Spirit effect our present life through the Word?

· What is God’s will according to Isaiah 46:8–13?

· What is the end result of God’s Will?

· If we didn’t have this choosing language in Scripture, how could we say that a person went against God’s will?

· How should God’s presence with His people forever change our perspective on how we came to faith, and how we live and communicate to those around us?

Participants needed for blood drive
First Baptist may soon host a blood drive on-site. Hoxworth would like us to gauge participation before committing to having staff here to conduct the drive. If you think you would participate on a weekday, please indicate so on your Connection Card or email info@firstbaptisthamilton.org. We need at least 30-35 people in order to host this in November or early December.

Meeting for those who want to join FBC membership
We invite anyone interested in learning about FBC membership to come to a 45-minute session with our senior pastor and other leaders after the morning worship service on Sunday, Sept. 26. Please tell us on your Connection Card if you will be coming. We will provide lunch and childcare. You may also register online at firstbaptisthamilton.org/contact.

Moms of children newborn to age 18 are invited to join MOPS & MOMSnext

2021 theme: All For Love

MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers and is for moms with children from infancy through kindergarten. We are a community of women from all stages and walks of life that meet together to relax, have fun and build meaningful relationships. MOPS exists for every mom and strives to provide a caring atmosphere where women can come to experience God's love, share the triumphs and struggles of motherhood, and continue to learn to be the best mom they can be.

MOMSnext is an open and accepting place for all mothers of school-aged kids to come, just as they are, to experience authentic community, personal growth, practical help, and spiritual hope. MOMSnext will encourage, equip, and develop moms in the next phase of mothering.

At our meetings, we always have a table for items that we call "MOP SWAP." Bring clothes or other items from your home you wish to part with and take others you want. All free.

Please bring an appetizer dish to share. For folks who have previously attended MOPS/MOMSnext, the fee is $7.

Your first meeting is free. Scholarships available.

About he 2021-22 MOPS International Theme: All For Love
Theme verse:
"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 (ESV)

After a year spent hunkering down, living smaller, and experiencing a little more fear and anxiety than usual, we are declaring this is the year of going big. It’s a year of fresh starts and turning ordinary experiences into extraordinary ones. Enthusiasm will replace worry. Friendship will replace loneliness. No longer will we wait to “get back to normal”; instead, we will start making space for the new things God has for us. We will become less guarded and more daring because this is our year to live All For Love.
Love is the most powerful force on the planet, and yet the concept almost seems cliché. We tell somebody we love them, and in the same breath we talk about how much we love a new podcast. Perhaps we’ve become so accustomed to the word that we’ve forgotten how revolutionary it is, how God’s love changes everything. It is life-altering, curse-lifting and, as shown in Christ’s resurrection, quite literally death-conquering.
This year we embrace the transformative power of love, to the point where it starts to affect everything we do — the way we talk to our kids, interact with strangers, handle disappointments, celebrate victories, make decisions. When love floods into our lives, it all shifts. It results in less doom-scrolling, more conversation. Less comparison, more community. Less fear, more confidence. More over-the-top displays of compassion. More patience. More life in our souls. This year, love will save us. In fact, it already has, because love’s name is Jesus.
Living All For Love means we will:
WALK IN POWER.
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. – 2 Timothy 1:7
The opposite of love is fear. Fear drives so many of our thoughts and decisions.
LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
Love your neighbor as yourself. – Matthew 22:39
Author Brennan Manning brilliantly wrote, “The litmus test of our love for God is our love for our neighbor.”
MAKE LOVE YOUR LEGACY.
Let all that you do be done in love. – 1 Corinthians 16:14
Your legacy is what people remember when you leave a place.
