Beyond Sunday
Like the Israelites in the desert heading toward the Promised Land, we are a faith community heading into a promised future. In this series, Together: Remembering - Experiences that Inform Our Future, we will learn from the Israelites’ story, found in the Book of Deuteronomy, about what they were called to remember in order to follow God well.
1. What are some of your favorite photos? What do they help you to remember?
2. Reflect on Deuteronomy 32:7. Why do you think God calls His people to remember and retell their story to each other? Watch the "Remember and Obey" video linked below for more insight.
3. One way the Israelites were called to remember was by reciting The Shema in the morning and the evening. Read through Deuteronomy 6:4-9. What parts of the passage is the Spirit of God highlighting to you?
4. In Deuteronomy 6:4-5 what is the passage saying about the LORD? Why is the word “LORD” in all caps? And why does the text mean that the LORD is one? Why is this important?
5. If verse 5 is telling us to love God with our entire being, what at times do you love more than God (i.e. status, security, self, substance, sensuality, etc.)? How could you bring these things to God to help you put them in the right place?
6. Reflect back on your life, what is one memorable scene where God taught you something specific that informed your future? What are two others? Why is it so important to remember them?
