The Causes of Suffering

· Some suffering is a result of our own sin
· Some suffering is a result of someone else's sin
· Some suffering is a result of Satan’s attacks
· Most suffering is a result of living in a fallen world
OUR RESPONSE TO SUFFERING

1. Trust God’s promises

2. Bring your pain to God and others
3. God always works for the good of His children

Dig Deeper
· As Americans, do we struggle with suffering more than others? If so, why?
· When you do face trials and sufferings, do you initially turn to God or away from Him? Why or why not?
· Read John 16:33. Is it surprising to you that God knows you will suffer? Knowing that we will suffer, what does God offer to us?
· Read 2 Corinthians 4:7-18. Based on this passage, why we are not supposed to give up? Where does our strength come from (see also Romans 8:26-27)?
· Read Deuteronomy 31:8. How are you comforted in times of suffering knowing that God is always with you?
· Read Romans 8:32. Does this change your perspective of suffering knowing that Jesus, too, endured suffering during his time on Earth? Why did God allow Jesus to suffer? Does this change your perspective on why we, too, suffer?
· Read 2 Corinthians 1:4. One of the key principles Pastor Josh shared was, “Turn your pain into a purpose.” How can you rely on scripture to guide you when comforting someone who is suffering?
