Introduction
And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the people say that I am?” 19 They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.” 20 And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.” 21 But He warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
So What?!
Jesus invites us to come after Him through:
1. Total Commitment:
“…he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” vs. 23b

Self-Denial; surrendering something I could have kept!
Daily Cross Bearing; Accepting a burden I could forgo

#2. Profitable Obedience:
“…whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.” vs. 24b
Expending myself in the line of fire!

Expending myself in the line of fire!
#3. Absolute Allegiance:
“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” vs. 26
Devoting myself with a whole heart!

Group Discussion: What was one thing that you were highly committed to as a kid?
Read out loud: Luke 9:18-27
If a disciple is a learner and they think they have to become completely flawless in being what Jesus wants, they wouldn’t be a learner anymore! A disciple will always be a disciple because they’re in a constant state of learning to follow Jesus. It’s called the process of sanctification, being set apart for usage by Jesus. Luke. 9:18-27 is not about flawlessness following but an ideal for which we strive!
Jesus invites us to come after Him through:
#1. Total Commitment: “…he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” vs. 23b. Self-Denial; surrendering something I could have kept! Daily Cross Bearing; accepting a burden I could forgo! 1). Have you made self-denial a habit or more of an idea you just haven’t gotten around to yet? What’s one thing you could surrender in order to attempt to build this habit, suggestion, start small! 2). What are you accepting so that you serve someone else by carrying their burden or helping them carry it?
#2. Profitable Obedience: “…whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.” vs. 24b. Expending myself in the line of fire! What are you facing today that would allow you to obey Jesus? A need for a godly attitude or action? Pray for one another that you’d be successful in obeying Jesus. Remember, even a cup of cold water in the name of Jesus is rewarded in heaven!
#3. Absolute Allegiance: “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” vs. 26. Devoting myself with my whole heart! Devotion involves forward thinking, “I’m devoted to my wife, what can I do for her to demonstrate it?” As you think about your upcoming day or week, how could you demonstrate your devotion to Jesus? Would it involve: Self-denial, bearing a cross or profitable obedience? Can you reflect back on last week and come up with some act of devotion? The New Testament has 56 “one another” statements, here are 10: be devoted to one another, honor one another, be of the same mind with one another, accept, admonish, greet, serve, bear one another’s burdens, submit to one another, encourage one another. Pick one and describe how you’ll get it accomplished.
Family Time:Luke 9:25 says, “For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?” Think of one thing your kids know is definitely wrong, like lying. Ask them if you paid them to lie would it make it alright? What if someone paid them all the money in the world would they do it? We tell the truth because it’s what Jesus commands us to do
