Making Progress in Your Faith [August 29] Greg Burlile
** Making spiritual progress in our walk with God requires the power He has given us as believers.

“For this reason” (vs 5)
** Making spiritual progress in your faith requires effort.

“…make every effort to supplement your faith…” (vs 5)

Romans 8:13; Colossians 3:5-10
** To become more spiritually mature, we are to pursue growing in …

Faith: Our walk with God begins and continues with trusting in what Jesus has done for us. Our faith grows as we trust God’s Word and those great and precious promises.

Virtue: This means moral excellence. Pursue a life that demonstrates a commitment to purity in action and thought. Sexually. Financially. Ethically at work / school.

Knowledge: Knowing God’s will and ways. Growing in discernment as we learn and apply what we learn.

Self-control: Discipline is required if we are to intentionally pursue spiritual growth.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Steadfastness: this is developed as we endure trials and persevere in following Jesus when it is difficult and unpopular.

Hebrews 12:1; James 5:11; Revelation 2:2-3

Godliness: Becoming like Jesus (godly) in our character.

1 Timothy 4:7-8; 2 Peter 3:10-11

Brotherly Affection: Pursue growing in your love for your fellow believers. We do this by being involved and committed to the local church.

Love: Becoming more spiritually mature of all this is greater love and concern for others.

Philippians 2:3-4
What Now?

1: Make sure you are a Christian

2: Use all the spiritual resources God has given us

Richard Foster quote:

We today lack a theology of growth. And so we need to learn how we “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). In particular, we need to learn to cooperate with “the means of grace” that God has ordained for the transformation of the human personality. Our participation in these God-ordained “means” will enable us increasingly to take into ourselves Christ’s character and manner of life.
