Part of our responsibility as Christian parents is to fully recognize the reality of the real world, while pointing our children to God's ideal.
We need both grace and truth. Truth without grace creates pretenders and hypocrits, while grace without truth creates a permissive version of faith, similar to what Diedrich Bonhoeffer called cheap grace: which is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance.
How do we point our children to the ideal while helping them navigate what is real?
When the reality of life doesn't match the ideal that God has for us, we acknowledge the real, but point them toward the ideal.
