I love this man's question after hearing the scriptures explained to him and the true story of what Jesus had done. What prevents me? This is the question, isn’t it?

What prevents you from being baptized?

At first it was lack of knowledge. He was reading the scripture but didn’t know about Jesus. Then God sent someone to explain who had been there with Jesus. When revelation came, his eyes were opened to see truth. He believed and then saw water. All that had prevented him was removed. He had knowledge, belief, water and someone do to it. He choose to do it!

What was the good news of Christ that Philip taught him? What had Jesus said or done that he shared with this guy? We can’t know the exact words but we know he told him what he had heard and observed! And we know that it caused faith to rise in this man who had been studying the scripture but not understanding what he read. Now he does understand and believes.

There is a story in Acts 19 where Paul is traveling through an area when he meets some follower of Jesus. He asks them if they had received the Holy Spirit when they became believers. They respond no, further saying that they had not even heard of Holy Spirit. Paul asks them about the meaning of their baptism and they say it was simply the baptism of John–the baptism of repentance. He tells them that John’s baptism was for those who were turning away from sin. When they heard this, and heard that there was a baptism into Christ they were then baptized into Christ and filled with Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues and prophesied.

Mark 16:15-16

Matthew 28:19

Seeing this command from Christ shows us that baptism is not just a suggestion, but is something He wanted us to do. Following Christ in baptism really becomes a matter of obedience to Him. We understand that the water does not save us, no more than our words when we confess Christ saves us, but it is our outward obedience of the inward work of Christ.

We believe in Christ with our heart, we confess Him with our mouth, we follow His instruction into the baptismal waters and we rise into newness of HIs life!

So through this all we see that something happens on the inside with belief or faith in Christ and what He has done for us. Then an outward display is done that shows what has happen to us.

Baptism is an outward display of an inward work!

Co-crucified, co-buried, co-raised, co-reign, co-labor, co-create with the Creator!

Maybe you were baptized as a child. Maybe you did it because it was the thing to do. Perhaps like me, you did it without the understanding or true knowledge of what it meant. You can be baptized again. If you are in our area, we invite you to attend our in person baptism service, July 25th, and celebrate with us those that will be baptized and if you so choose, be baptize to declare the work that has taken place inside of you.

However, if you cannot come to our Tennille Campus for the baptism, you can have a baptism in whatever water you can find, with your family or friends, right where you are. There are no regulations as to how baptism must be done. We do it in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and all in the name of Jesus Christ. Dads can baptize their kids. Moms can! Any believer can!

So, what is preventing you?
