I. Believers Needed to Be Warned about Scoffers (3:1-3)
A. If Peter were writing to us today, about what would he warn us?
1. The difference between right and wrong is all a matter of personal choice.
2. Speaking about sin and judgement to come is too offensive and must be avoided.
3. Judging between right and wrong is offensive and we just need to tolerate wrong beliefs.
B. This warning:
1. Establishes the writer of I Peter as the Apostle.
2. Was given to motivate believers to have wholesome (sincerity, purity of understanding, sincere intention) thinking.
- Plato used this phrase to refer to pure reason uncontaminated by the senses.
- The Greek word literally means, “sun-judged.” This was referring to the act of holding up a piece of pottery to allow sunlight to expose any cracks.
- The thinking and intentions of God’s people must be able to stand up under scrutiny and not be led astray by immoral desires (Phil. 4:8-10).

3. Called the believers’ attention back to very words of God (3:2).

- The Old Testament is referenced – “words spoken in the past by the holy prophets.”
- The New Testament is also referenced – “the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles.”
- Discussion questions: What does this teach us? How may we apply this to our lives right now?


I. Believers are Given A Description of Scoffers (3:3

A. This warning and teaching is a priority: “First, or Above all”
- Discussion question: Why is this a matter of great priority?
B. They will be active in the last days. Discussion question: How are they active now? What do the following verses teach us about this?

C. They will scoff.
1. Demeaning Scripture
2. Questioning Scripture
3. Discussion question: What should believers do to be ready to stand against this?

D. They will lack all self-control.
E. They will be judged, just like those who died in the Genesis Flood.
