Luke 9:43-62

In this passage of God’s Word we see several instances where Jesus is teaching His disciples about how the Kingdom of God works. By taking a look at these encounters we too can get a clear picture of how the kingdom of God operates:

1. It may not always seem to be working
Luke 9:43-45, James 1:12, Gal. 6:9, Rom. 8:28

2. Being great in God’s Kingdom, means being lowly on earth
Luke 9:46-48, Matt. 20:16, Prov. 16:18-19

3. Christ-centered unity is important
Luke 9:49-50, 11:23, John 17:20-21, Phil. 1:15-18

4. It’s not our job to condemn
Luke 9:51-56, Mark 3:17, John 8:1-11

5. Being a part of God’s Kingdom, means following Jesus wholeheartedly
Luke 9:57-62, Matt. 6:24, Ps. 119:1-2
Reflection Questions

1. As we talked about what the Kingdom of God is and how it works, did anything surprise you? Why or Why not?

2. In Luke 9:34, the disciples probably felt like they were undefeatable. However, Jesus reminds them that He will still have to be delivered up to die, and even though it won’t feel like it in the moment, this is what is supposed to happen. Do you ever feel like following God’s plan in your life just hasn’t worked out the way you thought it would or should? Why?

3. In Luke 9:49-50, John spoke to Jesus about stopping someone else who was casting out demons in Jesus’ name. Jesus rebukes John for doing this. Through Jesus’ rebuke we learn that having a mindset of Christ-centered unity is extremely important. Unfortunately, the church seems to continually be divided. In what ways have you seen the church be divided? How do you think the church as a whole could be more united under Christ? How could God use you to unite His church?

4. In Luke 9:51-56, James and John suggest bringing fire down from heaven to consume the village that just rejected Jesus. Jesus rebukes them for suggesting such an idea. Are you ever tempted to condemn people for their choices? If so, what type of people are you tempted to condemn and why? How can you have a more godly mindset towards those people?

5. In Luke 9:57-62, we see 3 encounters that teach us that being a part of God’s Kingdom and following Jesus, means doing so wholeheartedly. On a scale from 1-10, rate yourself on how well you are following Jesus wholeheartedly. In what are(s) of your life could you improve?
