God’s Spoken and Unspoken Revelation [June 20] Greg Burlile
God’s Spoken and Unspoken Revelation - Psalm 19
Psalm 19 ESV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
*** Creation Testifies to God’s Existence and Power (vss 1-6)
Creation speaks about the glory of God (vs 1)
It does so unceasingly (vs 2)
No person anywhere is without God’s revelation through nature (vss 3-4)
The Sun as an example: vss. 5-6
NASA office of space science says Our sun, the nearest star, is 93 million miles away. That's why the sun, which is a million times the size of the Earth, looks so small. It would take the Space Shuttle seven months to fly there. our star and its planets are just one small part of the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way is so big that even at the speed of light, it would take 100,000 years to travel across it.

Romans 1:20 ESV
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
*** The Bible is God’s Special Revelation - without it and God’s intervention in our lives we suppress the truth of God’s existence
Romans 1:18, 21-23
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
*** The Sufficiency of God’s Word (verses 7-11)
[covers just about every area of life; certainly everything that is necessary to know God and How He wants us to know Him and live]
perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, true
Reviving the soul = transforms our lives
Making wise the simple = wise for daily living
Rejoicing the heart = brings us joy
Enlightening the eyes = scripture is truth / reveals the truth to us (reality)
Enduring forever = the truth of God’s Word will never pass away
Righteous altogether
Give all this we should treasure it, study it, mediate on it…by God’s grace apply it and live it…there is great blessing in doing so.
***Our Response to God’s Revelation (verses 12-14)
*Through God’s Special Revelation of the Bible we understand sin and how it separates us from God (vss. 12-13)
*In the Bible, We see our need for a Jesus, Our Redeemer (vs 14)
- Jesus the ultimate “special revelation” (Hebrews 1:1-3)
Hebrews 1:1-3 ESV
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
2 Timothy 3:14-15 ESV
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it
15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
C.S. Lewis called the bible the book that reads you. It will tell you your life story and then tell you about the savior you’ve been looking for. Jesus Christ, the God Man died on a cross as a payment for your sin so that you can be reconciled to God. three days later he got up out of his grave defeating the power of death and ascended to the right hand of the father, promising that those who believe in him will also have life everlasting with the father.
