The Trap

Mark 10:1-4

Deuteronomy 24:1

Two schools of rabbinical thought:
1. Shammai – more theologically conservative - “find something indecent about her”
… Serious sexual sin, just short of adultery.

2. Hillel – more theologically liberal - “find something indecent about her”… Pretty much anything you want that to mean.
Jesus does not enter their debate
Truth

Mark 10:5-12

Truth
Since Deuteronomy 24 did not specifically ban divorce, both schools of thought took that as a sign that God approved of divorce.
- Jesus refutes this by going to Genesis 1
- Jesus declared marriage an act of God

Matthew 19:9

In summary, Jesus is saying a divorce can be permitted in cases of sexual immorality.

1 Corinthians 7:13-15

When is a divorce permitted (not commanded) for a Christian?
When there is sexual immorality or when an unbelieving spouse leaves the marriage.
Note: If there is abuse involved, separate immediately.
5 Take-a-ways
1. If you are married, enrich your marriage
2. Resist judging those going through it
3. Don’t move quick - even if permitted
4. Don’t take your cues from culture, listen to God
5. Give grace to those affected
