A Proper Christian Focus Involves:

I. The New Birth (v. 1)

1. It is exclusively about Jesus.
2. It is only by faith.
3. It results in a profession that brings salvation.

II. Ongoing, Intentional Effort (vv. 1-2)

A. Seek
1. An imperative command.
2. Present tense used and it means continuous or repeated action.
3. It means, to have an absolute and strong desire.
4. Believers, as a matter of obedience, are to continually seek:
a. Things that have eternal value.
b. Things that are consistent with God’s will.
c. Things that are consistent with the way Jesus lived.
d. Things that bear witness to the faith and profession they have made for salvation from sins.

B. Set
1. An imperative command.
2. Present tense used and it means continuous or repeated action.
3. It means, to seek something out with a desire to possess it.
4. It involves cultivating a focus on the eternal.


III. Embracing Our Spiritual Reality (v. 3)

A. Believers are dead to sin through Jesus’ death on the cross.
1. “Died” is in the aorist tense, indicating this happened at a point and time.
2. According to Scripture, it happened in the past when Jesus died

B. Believers are secure in Christ (v. 3. “…your life has been hid…”)
1. This is in the aorist tense and it indicates that it happened at a point and time in the past. It is a settled reality.
2. This is in the passive voice which indicates something that was done for or to us. We cannot and do not accomplish this for ourselves.
B. Believers have hope that is rooted in the irrevocable promises of God, through Jesus (v. 4).

1. Jesus is coming again.
2. Those who have believed will be with Jesus in glory.

IV. Killing Sin (vv. 5-11)

A. “…put to death…”
1. Is an imperative command.
2. Is in the aorist tense. Believers are to take decisive, violent action against sin in their own lives.
B. The things believers are to kill:
1. Sexual immorality = any form of illicit, sexual relationship
2. Impurity = any crudeness or insensitivity relative to sexual matters
3. Lust = evil sexual passions and desires
4. Evil desire = Wanting something that is sinister and vile in order to fulfill one’s desires
5. Greed = relentless urge to get more for oneself
6. Anger = continuous attitude of hatred that remains bottled up
7. Wrath (rage) = outbursts of anger or quick tempered
8. Malice = doing evil and causing trouble
9. Slander = destroying another’s good reputation with lies and gossip
10. Filthy language = crude, abrasive and expletive-filled language
