Friday 5:00 PM

In this passage of God’s Word, we see Jesus meet two people who both find themselves in difficult desperate situations. First, it’s a man whose 12-year-old, only daughter is dying. Then, He is approached by a woman who has been ill for 12 years. By taking a look at their situations, we too can learn how to handle a desperate situation, when we inevitably end up in one.

1. Go to Jesus, despite culture
Luke 8:41, 44, 9:26, Mark 8:38, Rom. 1:16, Matt. 10:32-33

2. Trust in God’s timing
Luke 8:43, Hab. 2:3, Is. 40:31, Ps. 27:14, Gal. 6:9

3. Understand the New Covenant
Luke 8:44, Ez. 36:26-27, Heb. 8:6, Jer. 31:31-33
Reflection Questions

1. Have you ever felt like you’ve been in a desperate situation, like either the man with a dying daughter or the woman with a discharge of blood had been in, before? If so, what was it and how did you handle it? How did it affect your relationship with God?

2. Both the man and the woman in this story went to Jesus in the midst of their desperate situation. What do you do when you get desperate? Why? How does that affect your relationship with God?

3. Do you ever struggle to trust in God’s timing? Is there a specific situation that you struggled to trust God’s timing? How can you trust His timing better in the future?

4. Being touched by the woman and touching the dead body of the 12-year-old girl would have made Jesus unclean. However, this story in particular teaches us that Jesus fulfills the law and thus institutes a New Covenant with humanity. Have you ever struggled to understand that before? If so, how and why? How can you more fully understand the New Covenant moving forward?
