Palmyra Grace Church

Sunday, May 30th 2021 (Outdoor Service)

Sunday, May 30th 2021 (Outdoor Service)

Every day the world pulls at us, calling us to live for the here and now, for ourselves, and for material gain. It calls us to find happiness and blessing not in the upside-down Kingdom of God but in the world as we want it - how we want it. In his book, The Divine Conspiracy, Dallas Willard says The Beatitudes are "explanations and illustrations, drawn from the immediate setting, of the present availability of the kingdom through personal relationship to Jesus." Jesus, in the greatest sermon ever preached, gives us a different vision of life, a different way of being anchored, a different way of living blessed. Join us for the next few weeks as we walk through Jesus’ teachings in our new sermon series “Blessed in Chaos."

Death Was Arrested

Verse 1
Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin
Lost without hope with no place to begin
Your love made a way to let mercy come in
When death was arrested and my life began

Verse 2
Ash was redeemed only beauty remains
My orphan heart was given a name
My mourning grew quiet my feet rose to dance
When death was arrested and my life began

Chorus
Oh your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with you
It’s your endless love pouring down on us
You have made us new now life begins with you

Verse 3
Released from my chains I’m a prisoner no more
My shame was a ranson He faithfully bore
He cancelled my debt and called me His friend
When death was arrested and my life began

Chorus
Oh your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with you
It’s your endless love pouring down on us
You have made us new now life begins with you

Verse 4
Our Savior displayed on a criminal’s cross
Darkness rejoiced as though Heaven had lost
But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand
That’s when death was arrested and my life began

Chorus
Oh your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with you
It’s your endless love pouring down on us
You have made us new now life begins with you

Be the mountain where I run
The fountain I drink from

Be the shadow where I hide
The ransom for my life
Oh He is my song

Chorus
You are good good oh
You are good good oh
You are good good oh
You are good good oh

Verse 2
Let the King of my heart
Be the wind inside my sails
The anchor in the waves
Oh He is my song
Let the King of my heart
Be the fire inside my veins
Echo of my days
Oh He is my song

Chorus
You are good good oh
You are good good oh
You are good good oh
You are good good oh

Grace Group Questions

Week 8: Kingdom Persecution

1 What are the biggest one or two takeaways you will have from this sermon series?

2 Have you ever experienced persecution, false or evil talk toward you, or insult/mocking? How did it make you feel? How did you respond?

3 Read Matt. 5:10-11. What words or phrases jump out at you? What are the two reasons that Jesus shares we will be persecuted for (hint: sake)?

4 Dan explained that Kingdom Persecution is the negative pursuit of others toward you because of your pursuit of Jesus. How does this definition (and the quote below) help your understanding of persecution? Does it challenge your previous thoughts about persecution?

“Persecution is simply the clash between two irreconcilable value-systems.”
- John Scott

5 Pastor Dan shared that if we as Christians are going to be rejected/persecuted, it should be for the beatitudes, not our attitudes. Do you think Christians in the U.S.A. are rejected more for the beatitudes, our stance on truth, our following of Jesus, or our attitudes? How do you sometimes think, as Western Christians, we sometimes place our politics, positions, power (or loss of it), and our influence (or loss of it) as the measure of persecution? Is there an attitude that God is calling you to repent from as a result of this message?

6 Read Matt 5:12. How did Pastor Dan explain we find joy and blessing in persecution? Consider the quote below:

“The faith-community of the blessed is the community of the Crucified. With him, they lost everything, and with him, they found everything.”
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
