Earnestly Desire…
The Purpose, Protocol and Pursuit of Pentecost
Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. - 1 Corinthians 14:1 (ESV)
Pursue (Intensely press forward) love (Agape - CHRIST LIKE LOVE), and earnestly desire (be jealous for, set your heart upon and intensely desire ) the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy (Speak forth what God is speaking).
Why? To build up yourself and to build His church!
There is a purpose, a protocol and pursuit of gifts of pentecost
1) THERE IS A PURPOSE TO THE GIFTS OF PENTECOST
to Glorify the Son
to Edify the Church
to Identify the Sinner
A) TO GLORIFY THE SON
1 Corinthians 12:1–3 (ESV) 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
1 John 4:1–3 (ESV) Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
The Anointing on a man or woman is not God’s endorsement of the MAN, the MESSAGE or the METHOD
2 Corinthians 4:7 (ESV) But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.
When you see a gift in operation, you should say, "If God can use them, then he can use me!"
B) TO EDIFY THE CHURCH
1 Corinthians 14:1–5 (ESV): 14 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up
Edify - to build up, strengthen, to make more able
Make Yourself More Able
“I want you all to speak in tongues. The One who speaks in a tongue builds up himself. The one who speaks in tongues speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the spirit”
Make The Church More Able
“Earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. The one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who prophesies builds up the church. I want you all to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up"
C) TO IDENTIFY THE SINNER
1 Corinthians 14:23–25 (ESV) 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.
2) THERE IS A PROTOCOL TO THE GIFTS OF PENTECOST
14: 26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
1 Corinthians 14:40 (ESV) 40 But all things should be done decently and in order.
Paul offers specific protocols to address the church in Corinth's past problems. The underlying principals are remain presently relevant
A) PROTOCOL PROVIDES CLARITY
Principle: ALL SHOULD BE ABLE TO HEAR and UNDERSTAND
B) PROTOCOL PROVIDES COVERING
Principle: ALL SHOULD BE UNDER AUTHORITY
