Share about a time you've felt close to God. Where were you, how did you feel, what impact did it have on you?
It's also common and natural to wonder why we don't feel close to God. Pastor Eric shared a few reasons why this may be the case. Which of these reasons apply to you?
Life's challenges
Shame
A relationship that has skewed our view of God
Sin

Jesus invites us to follow Him, not simply believe in Him. Pastor Eric gave us a picture of Dark and Light to illustrate this. With that in mind, discuss the following passage as a group.

1 John 1:5-10

We all have a tendency to stuff, hide, or deny our sin. But, true healing begins with confession, which is both vertical and horizontal. Starting with the vertical, what has resulted from the times you've talked with God about your sin? How has it felt?

Horizontal confession is when we confess our sins to others. Read the following scripture together.

James 5:16

In your experience, how have you seen God use horizontal confession to heal personal pain and restore relationships?
Let's face it, confession is hard! We know the healing it can bring, but we still avoid it. Which of the following most prevent you from confessing a sin? Fear of conflict, rejection, vulnerability, of God?
What misinformation about God do you need to let go of?
What is keeping you from agreeing with God about what is in your heart?
What is keeping you from having a conversation with someone you've hurt?
