Introduction

...it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order… Lk. 1:3

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
Lk. 4:14-15
5 CONFLICT STORIES, 5:17 - 6:12

…filled with rage they discussed what they might do to Jesus. 6:11
Who is the hero?

What is His quest?
And it was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, He called His disciples to Him…

Disciple: mathatais, one who is taught and applies the teaching

…and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:

Apostle: apostolos, one sent to deliver a message, ambassador

14 Simon, whom He also named Peter,
and Andrew his brother;
and James and John;
and Philip and Bartholomew;
15 and Matthew and Thomas;
James the son of Alphaeus,
and Simon who was called the Zealot;
16 Judas the son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
17 Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,

18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.

19 And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.

…many of His disciples withdrew, and were not walking with Him anymore. John 6:66
So What?!

To the world you may only be one person,

but to one person you may be the world!
Jesus the Philosopher: Answers for Life
Luke 6:12-19, May 13 & 16, 2021

Prayer Requests:

Group Discussion: Who’s your favorite comic book super-hero and why?

Read out loud: Luke 6:12-19

As you read through the names of the disciples/apostles who do you admire, resemble or by whom are you intrigued?
If you had to go back in time and be one of Jesus disciples who would you be?
Jesus trained His disciples to:
#1. Accept responsibility. As Jesus’ followers moved from disciple to apostle, they didn’t become Rabbis they became ambassadors to carry His message across the Roman world. What kind of difficulties did they face that are written about in scripture, and what kind of difficulties does your imagination think they faced? What are the most significant responsibilities you face as a follower of Jesus?
#2. Obey. “A long obedience in the same direction.” Eugene Peterson. In what ways do you struggle to obey Jesus? Do you think it’s easier for us in the USA to obey Jesus because it’s often just a part of our residual Christian culture? How is Christianity becoming counter-cultural to the USA? Do you think Christians being persecuted is good for or bad for the Church?
#3. Mature their giftedness. What gift has God given you that has matured the most in your life? Is there a gift in which you’d like to mature?
#4. Be transformed. From suspicion to conviction means you get a glimpse of something good and it ultimately becomes a God-given conviction. Which one of these traits would you say you started with suspicion and it became conviction: Patience, Love, Serving others, Evangelism, Listening, Speaking kindly?
#5. Mutually submit to one another. From whom are you willing to take orders, other than a boss at work, and what kinds of things do they ask of you?
#6. Follow leadership of Peter. Peter is made the central leader of the 12 disciples, what’s your favorite story of Peter’s life? Do you think Peter was impulsive or just convinced he needed to obey Jesus because He God in human flesh?
#7. Die. (opposite of Scribes and Pharisees)
If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. Lk. 9:23. Do you think church attendance would go up or down if attending meant risking your life? Do you think there would be more or less Christians?
Family Time: Luke 6:17-18 says, …a large crowd of His disciples…had come to hear him…. Ask your kids what their favorite book or story or Biblical story is. Ask them to tell it to you. Ask them why that story is so important, meaningful, interesting to them.
