Acts 1:3-8

There was a commission TO GO
There was a command TO WAIT

The Church could not, would not change the world by just looking like a better version of the world. There has to be a DISTINCTIVE.

They had to be “Set Apart” (1 Pet 2:9)

The church was called to become an OUTLIER

An Outlier - In statistics, an outlier is a data point that differs significantly from other observations. An outlier may be due to variability in the measurement, or an anomaly. An outlier can cause serious problems in statistical analyses.

The church was birthed, not to conformed to the norm...but to be transformed outside of the norm.

Acts 2:1-4

Three Preludes to Pentecost:

1) PENTECOST WAS PRECEDED BY A COMING TOGETHER

vs 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

- UNITY IS NOT AN OPTION

Jesus commanded coming together

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (Jn 13:34–35).

The word greek word translated “one accord” denotes an inner unity with one another that resulted in an external expression of unity in action

- UNITY IS A PRECURSOR TO AN OUTPOURING

Ps 133
Mat 18:20

Nothing breaks the anointing like division
Nothing invites the anointing like unity

2) PENTECOST WAS PRECEDED BY A SEASON OF SITTING TOGETHER

vs 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Jesus commanded them to wait
2:4 he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait

Season of waiting with...
... wonder
... worship
... worry
... weariness
... wavering
... woes

If you’ve found yourself in a season of waiting… Know you’re in good company. The disciples waiting room became the upperroom!
3) PENTECOST REQUIRED A STANDING OUT TOGETHER

vs 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance

Another command of Jesus, to be filled with the Spirit

And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
(Lk 24:49)

“be filled with the Spirit” (Eph 5:18)

This isn't an option, you can't go until you first wait

Why tongues?

It’s The Initial Physical Evidence

Acts 2:1–4 Day of Pentecost, Tongues is given to each believer
Acts 8:14–17 Samaritans received Baptism and a manifestation is observed, Tongues would be the logical manifestation of the Spirit
Acts 9:17 Paul receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit, later says he spoke in tongues (1 Cor 14:8)
Acts 10:44–46 Gentiles receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with tongues
Acts 19:6 - Ephesians receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with tongues

Why Tongues… The tongue directs your Life (James 3:3-12)
Why Tongues… Tongues edifies, builds up the individual (1 Cor 14:4)
Why Tongues… Tongues is a pure prayer language (1 Cor 14:2)

10 HINDERANCES AND HELPS TO RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT

1) I know God wants to fill me but for some reason he hasn't seen fit to fill me in yet. When he gets ready, I'm sure he will.

“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13 (ESV).

He is ready when you ask!

2) I'm not sure that being filled with the spirit is for me. It's not for everybody, you know.

For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself” Acts 2:39 (ESV).

You're right the promise isn’t for everyone, just for believers!

3) I guess I'm just not ready. When I get good enough maybe the Lord will fill me.

Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
(Ac 2:38)

If you’ve repented and received Jesus, then you’re ready!

4) I've tried so many times before but nothing happened

And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. (Lk 11:9–10).

Don’t let your past create a theology of doubt and unbelief!

5) Maybe I don't have enough patience to tarry or wait on the Lord as I should.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (Gal 5:22-23)

Patience is a fruit of the spirit and a discipline we strengthen with use. Waiting on the Lord is not a chore, its a privilege and a spiritual discipline you need to grow in!

6) I'm afraid I might get in the flesh or the devil might deceive me into saying something false.

I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:2–3 (ESV)

Your faith is in Christ, not the devil. Second, test all things. If it glorifies Jesus as Lord it can't be the devil.

7) I guess I just don't have the faith to receive.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Ro 10:17).

What have you been listening to?

8) I get distracted when I try to seek the infilling of the spirit

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (Jas 4:7–8)

Of course you do. Your flesh, nor the enemy want you to draw close to God.

9) Well, you see, I'm just not a very emotional person in the first place, so I don't think the speaking in tongues is for me.

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts (1 Co 14:1)

Paul said to run after the gifts, not run from them!

10) People praying loudly around me get on my nerves, its distracting.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matt 5:5-6).

You don’t have to receive the baptism with people around… you just need the presence of the Lord and an open heart

Simple Steps To Receive

1) Repent and Believe (Acts 2:38)

The only prerequisite to receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is to have repented of your sins and placed your full faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior

2) Ask with Expectation (Luke 11:9-13)

Remember, Jesus promised to give the Holy Spirit when we ask. So ask, and expect to receive

3) Tarry until you Receive (Luke 24:49)

Create and atmosphere to worship and spend time in His presence, and receive the Holy Spirit. Let the Holy Spirit flow through you.
