I Am God's Temple [April 25] Greg Burlile
Message Notes for 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Series: “Who He Says I Am”
Message Title: “I Am God’s Temple”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
1: If I Have Put My Faith in Jesus, God Dwells in Me
1 Corinthians 6:19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?…
—-
Romans 8:9-11 ESV
9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
John 14:15-17, 23 ESV
15 “If you love me, keep my commands.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you
2: I Am Not the Owner of My Body
1 Corinthians 6:19-20a ESV
19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price.

1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV
18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
1 Peter 1:18-19 NLT
18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.
19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
This is counter cultural. As a Christian, I don’t have a right to do whatever I want with my body. Why? Because I’m not my own anymore. I can only do what God says I can do with and to my body.
*** Since I’m no longer my own…I live for Jesus
2 Corinthians 5:15 ESV
15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
***The freedom with which I have been brought into is not the freedom to do as I please. It is the freedom to live as Jesus instructs me to live.
3: I Am to Bring Honor to God in How I Live and use My Body
1 Corinthians 6:20b ESV
…Therefore honor God with your bodies.
We belong to God therefore let all the parts of our lives be used to please Him.
This is what Romans 12:1 tells us
Romans 12:1 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
****Offering God our whole selves….

Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
——
*** If we are called to live wholly for Jesus and honor God with our bodies sure that starts with our minds and how we think…what we put into our minds and listen to and watch.
*** But also within the context of this passage in 1 Corinthians he’s telling them that God cares about what we do with our bodies. He does want us using our bodies committing acts of immorality and sexual sin - sex outside the confines of a biblical marriage.
*** John Piper says “To glorify God with our body means to use your body in ways that will show that God is more satisfying, more precious, more to be desired, more glorious than anything the body craves.”
