I Peter 5:8
8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.
5 Relational Essentials:

•Unity
•Sympathy
•Loyalty
•Mercy
•Humility
UNITY is to give deliberate consideration to what the other person is thinking – seeking agreement.

True UNITY requires a TEACHABLE attitude and a TRANSPARENT spirit.

James 1:19
My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

"The greatest problem with communication is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. When we listen with curiosity…we listen for what’s behind the words." - Roy Bennett

•Listen more than you speak (Pr. 18:15)
•Don’t interrupt while the other is speaking (Pr. 18:2)
•Honor the other as you speak (Pr. 18:19)

We cannot assume the other person knows what we’re thinking when we don’t speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15, 25)
SYMPATHY is to walk with others through painful circumstances so that they’re not alone with their burdens.

•Prioritize another’s pain over your agenda (Job 2:11)
•Acknowledge their pain, don’t downplay it (Job 2:12)
•Listen well—it may be more beneficial than advice given (Job 3-37)

LOYALTY is to value others through commitment, confirmation, and—when necessary—confrontation.

Circle of Commitment: Jonathan
Circle of Confirmation: Samuel
Circle of Confrontation: Nathan
MERCY is to be gracious with others in their need and to be forgiving toward them when they’ve wronged us.

•The merciful person is less prone to anger (Eph. 4:31-32)
•The merciful person is proactively thoughtful in word and speech (4:32)
•The merciful person is intentional about the forgiving of others (4:32)
HUMILITY is to seek opportunities to serve one another, crucifying your desire for personal advantage.

•Pride assumes; humility listens.
Are you listening well to what the other person is saying?
•Pride defends; humility repents.
Are you giving adequate attention to your personal shortcomings?
