The God of Jonah
Today we are starting a new series in the book of Jonah. Just as in society today, there was a lot of animosity and hatred in the time of Jonah. When God told Jonah to preach to violent people, Jonah didn't want to. But God's mercy knows no bounds.

Sermon: Jonah Part 1 - The God of Jonah
Everyone is encouraged to bring a Bible (Phone apps are good for reading together in the same translation. Study Bibles give help with interpretation.)

Questions:
1. Have you ever consciously avoided God? What happened?
2. The sermon looked at the three first verses of the book of Jonah. What stood out to you? Do you have any questions to bring up?
3. Read Luke 10:25-29
a) What was the expert in the law concerned about?
b) As was often the case, Jesus answered by asking another question. Why do you think Jesus tended to do this?
c) What was the expert’s understanding of how to inherit eternal life? Where did he get his ideas from? (see Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18)
d) According to Jesus, was the man correct?
e) What was the problem? (see Romans 3:23 and 1 John 1:8)
f) Why do you think he wanted to “justify himself”?
4. Now take some time to read and discuss Luke 10:30-37. Then answer the following:
a) What did Jewish people think of Samaritans? (see John 4:9 and John 8:48)
b) Why do you think Jesus chose a Samaritan to be the hero of the story?
c) How did Jesus change the question in Luke 10:29? (see Luke 10:36). Why is this important?
d) Are there certain types of people that you have trouble loving?
e) In what practical ways can you be a better neighbor to those who are difficult to love?
f) How does all of this relate to the story of Jonah?
5. Now spend some time praying for each other. Ask that God would give you His heart of compassion for the unloving and unlovable. Ask for faith to obey Him in whatever He calls you to.
