Sunday 12:00 AM

In this passage of God’s Word we see a woman who has lost it all. However, in the midst of her horrible situation, she is met by Jesus. This passage of Scripture says that Jesus had compassion on her. By taking a look at this story we can see what God’s compassion looks like, and how He has compassion for all of us as well.

God shows us His compassion by:

1. Seeking us out
Luke 7:11-12, 1 John 4:19, Ps. 86:15

2. Encountering us personally
Luke 7:13-14, Jer. 1:5, Ps. 139:1-4

3. Healing us completely
Luke 7:15, Ps. 41:1-3, 147:3
Reflection Questions

1. By talking directly with the widow and choosing to touch her son, Jesus encounters this woman personally. By doing this He shows her that He cares for her, and is not solely interested in building His following. Do you have an example in your life where you felt God encountered you personally, and it drew you nearer to Him because of it? Is there a way that you can help this happen for the people in your life?

2. Jesus went out of His way to intentionally seek out this woman. That action shows us that God cares for us and seeks us out as well. Do you ever struggle to remember God’s love for you? Do you ever struggle with being as gracious, merciful, and compassionate towards yourself as God is towards you? Do you ever struggle with being as gracious, merciful, and compassionate towards others as God is towards others? Why do you think that is?

3. Jesus not only brought the young man back to life but did so in such a way that the young man could immediately start talking. By doing so, He shows us that not only can He heal, but He can heal completely; bringing what was completely dead, back to a thriving life. What situation in your life do you need God to bring from completely dead to thriving?
