The husband's headship in their homes should reflect Christ's headship of the church. Ephesians 5:23 says, “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church.” Leadership and love for the church went hand in hand for Christ, and therefore should be the same in our lives as well when it comes to our leadership.

Love. Specifically:

1) Sacrificial love. (not self-serving or object-oriented)

2) Sanctifying love. (positional and progressive)

The “water” is referencing the baptism of the Holy Spirit.Which happens at the moment a person places their faith in Christ, and they are indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God, which sets them apart from the world by placing them into the family of God.The “word” is referencing the gospel message. Without hearing the message of the gospel, a person cannot recognize their need for and place their faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ.

3) Nourishing love. (giving strength, comfort, encouragement, intimacy, security)

Paul wants us to understand that the relationship between Christian husbands and wives is sacred, because it is beautifully tied together with the sacred relationship between Christ and the church.
