Introduction
Concept #1. Expiation = to be cleansed
Leviticus 14, purification of leprosy

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
I John 1:7

Luke 5:16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.
Concept #2. Sanctification – to be set apart
Concept #3. Reconciliation – to change from enmity to friendship

Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is evil in Your sight,
So that You are justified when You speak
And blameless when You judge. Psalm 51:4
So What?!
How can I employ these 3 concepts in following Christ?
#1. Baptism is an act of being clean (Expiation.)

Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

Corresponding to that (Noah was saved through the flood,) baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, I Peter 3:21
#2. Sabbath is a day of being free (Sanctification.)

Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27
#3. Friendship is our service to the world (Reconciliation.)

17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature…(God) reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ…. II Corinthians 5:17-21

Group Discussion: What has been your most relaxing vacation of all time?
Read out loud: Luke 5:12-26
How can I employ these 3 concepts in following Christ?
#1. Baptism is an act of being clean (Expiation: to be washed clean.)
Expiation is the idea of being washed clean of your past sins like a person would be washed after working in the mud. There’s a great show on TV called dirty jobs, what’s the dirtiest job you’ve ever had? Paul says, “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4. Baptism is symbolic of death, burial and resurrection, did you fully understand that when you were baptized? Describe the where, when, how, and why of your baptism or were you never baptized?
The Apostle Peter says, “Corresponding to that (Noah was saved through the flood,) baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, I Peter 3:21. Did accepting Jesus as your Savior and/or baptism relieve your conscience or did you not really have a guilty conscience?
#2. Sabbath is a day of being free (Sanctification: to be set apart.) Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27. Sanctification means to be set apart, Sunday is a day that is set apart for rest, worship, freedom and enjoyment. What do you enjoy doing or not doing on Sunday?
#3. Friendship is our service to the world (Reconciliation: to forgive enemies.)
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature…(God) reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ….II Corinthians 5:17-21. The word “ministry,” means to serve, so we are ambassadors who serve to all the process of reconciliation or forgiveness of people who are at war with each other. Is there a story in your lie of someone you had to forgive or from whom you had to ask forgiveness?
Family Time: Here’s a fun one! Read your kids Luke 5:12-14 and tell them leprosy was a skin disease that looked terrible, but when someone was cured it went away. The person looked like they were covered in something like mud and then got it washed off. Create a big mud puddle and get your kids covered in mud and then wash them off with the hose, shower, pool or super-soaker!
