God had granted them a kindness to give according to their ability.
This generosity was not something that developed naturally over time, but was instead God's grace given to them that enabled them to be the instrument of God's grace to others.
For people experiencing adversity who seemed unable to give since they were the ones needing help; to give generously to relieve the afflictions of others is remarkable.
The Greek word used for “trial” speaks of that which has been tried and has stood the test.
They did not measure their success by how much they had, but by how much they gave.
There are two things the apostle commends the charity of the churches of Macedonia
1. The quantity of their gift, which, he said, went beyond what they were expected to give, and even what they were able to give, considering their own great poverty.

They gave not only money, but themselves, their time, thought, energy, primarily to Christ as their Lord, and then to the Apostle as His minister.f
