Defusing Doubt (Luke 24:13-49)

Have you ever had doubts about areas of life?

Have you ever had moments of spiritual doubt in your life?
”For many Christians, merely having doubts of any kind can be scary. They wonder whether their questions disqualify them being a follower of Christ. They feel insecure because they’re not sure whether it’s permissible to express uncertainty about God, Jesus, or the Bible. Sothey keep their questions to themselves—and inside, unanswered, they grow and fester . . . until they eventually succeed in choking out their faith.”
(Lee Strobel, The Case for Faith (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan, 2000), 316.)
“Any Christian who is intellectually engaged and reflecting about his faith will inevitably face the problem of doubt.” – William Lane Craig
Spiritual doubts become a problem when we don’t do anything about them.
We all have to deal with and defuse our spiritual doubts.
When we don’t deal with our spiritual doubts, it causes us to drift away from God. Undealt with doubting almost always leads to drifting.
We need to be committed to His plan, not ours (Luke 24:21).
- What’s required? Humility.

Humility must kick in when expectations evaporate.
In their minds you can’t have a Messiah who is dead.
The redemption of Israel was the common hope among the Jews.
Each day, resign yourself to God’s plan afresh. In humility, remind yourself that this universe is His plan – not yours.
We need to be engaged in meaningful community (Luke 24:33-35,49).
- What’s required? Connectivity.
What’s the key thought?

Connectivity allows for questions and fears and encourages you while in it.
Jesus told all the disciples to stay in Jerusalem and be near each other. Right now they needed each other.
They needed solidarity.
•Kids, you need to be in Awana
•Grades 5-6, you need to be in Ignite
•Teens, you need to be in Third Place
•Adults, you need to be in a Connection Group
We need to remember past moments of truth
(Luke 24:44).
- What’s required? Reiteration.
What’s the key thought?

Spiritual reiteration prevents spiritual amnesia.
This is why remembering key truths about Scripture and rehearsing them and going over them again is such a good practice.
We need to allow God’s truth to guide us, not feelings (Luke 24:27, 44).
- What’s required? Faith.
•He doesn’t tell them to listen to their feelings.
•He doesn’t tell them to listen to their hearts.
•He doesn’t tell them to look for the rainbow in the clouds.

He takes them to the Word of God.
Am I allowing my circumstances to be the guide of how I think and live? Meaning – do the circumstances of life dictate my joy, my trust in God, my reactions?
Take on anxious thought you’ve been struggling with and see what God’s Word has to say about it.

Commit to mediate on that truth.

When you’re anxious – meditate on that truth.
We need to be committed to His plan, not ours (Luke 24:21).
