SUMMER SCHOOL - PART 2 [June 11/12, 2016] Tim Haring

We have a reason to be happy.

Matthew 5:1-10

It is important to note that the Sermon on the Mount is descriptive before it is prescriptive. It describes what the Christian is before talking of what the Christian should do. For Jesus, obedience grows out of blessedness; the statement of our condition precedes the demands of our discipleship.
– Dr. I. D. Campbell

Matthew 5:1-3

Matthew 5:4

Isaiah 61:1-2

Matthew 5:5

As toward God, therefore, meekness accepts his dealings without murmur or resistance as absolutely good and wise. As toward man, it accepts opposition, insult, and provocation, as God’s permitted ministers…
- M. R. Vincent

Matthew 5:6

The word “filled” in this verse is a very strong and graphic word, originally applied to the feeding and fattening of animals in a stall.[1] – Dr. M. R. Vincent

Psalms 45:7

Matthew 5:7

The adjective for merciful means those whose bent is to show mercy, not those who engage in an occasional merciful impulse
- L. Morrris

Matthew 5:8

Hebrews 12:14

Matthew 5:9

Matthew 5:10

Questions:

1. Do you think most people these days are happy? Explain your answer. If people are not happy, why do you think that is the case?

2. Where do most people turn to find happiness?

3. Read Matthew 5:1-10. To which of these “beatitudes” do you most relate?

4. Considering these beatitudes, what are some of the things that can steal our joy or happiness?

5. Read Matthew 5:3. What do you think it means to be poor in spirit? Why is it important that we be poor in spirit?

6. Can you relate to the comfort Jesus talked about in verse 4?

7. The beatitudes are “promises” more than they are “conditions for joy,” but how might we apply some of these to our lives in order to experience greater happiness?

8. What is one thing you think you can do to experience greater happiness this week?

Miss a weekend?
