A church is a living body of Christ with many members (1 Corinthians 12:7-21). He puts it together as he wants and all of us together are a part of it; together we make the church.
Members of a church are uniquely related to every other member of the church (1 Corinthians 12:22-31). We are not autonomous and independent of one another. Many Christians think their walk with God is independent of anyone else and they are not accountable to the church. It's true Christians have direct access to God through Christ. However, God created the church as his redemptive agent in the world. He has a purpose for the church. God places every member in a church to accomplish his redemptive purposes through that congregation. The church depends on every member in order to live a normal, healthy church life.
God is more interested in who a church is than in what a church does. God wants His people to:
1- Be holy and pure (1 Peter 1:14-16, Philippians 2:14-16).
2- Display unity (John 17:20-21, 23, Ephesians 4:3).
3- Love one another (1 John 3:11, 18, 23).
For Discussion:
A church is a living body of Christ with many members (1 Corinthians 12:7-21).
Who receives spiritual gifts in the church?
Why does the Holy Spirit give gifts to every believer?
Why is it that the Spirit gives the gifts? Why did he alone decide which gifts the members of the body should have?
Talk about a time when you’ve thought, “I don’t belong because I can’t (blank) like (blank)."
Members of a church are uniquely related to every other member of the church (1 Corinthians 12:22-31).
What are some tasks that seem “the weakest and least important” at WestWay?
How are they the most necessary?
How does harmony happen within the body of Christ?
Talk about a time when serving was “beneath you”?
Evaluate WestWay’s faithfulness to Being Holy & Pure (1 Peter 1:14-16, Philippians 2:14-16), Unified (John 17:20-21, 23, Ephesians 4:3), and Loving (1 John 3:11, 18, 23).
How do you see these things at WestWay? How does (or not) WestWay demonstrate these things? How can we grow in them?
What role do you play in your answer?
Read 1 Corinthians 12 once more. Ask God to speak to you about your church and how it can better function as a body of Christ. Ask Him to speak to you about your relationship to the body of Christ. Discuss and record anything you sense God is saying to you through His Word.
