Our series for February and March is entitled, "What's In a Name?"

The series title is a question so that we can think about what is found in a name. It identifies a person, place, or object and brings a distinction between it and another.

So far we've looked at 4 names of God:
Elohim - The God who is Creator
Yahweh - The God who is Personal/Relational
Abba - The God who is Intimate
Adonai - The God who Rules
Today our text is found in Genesis 22. It is an incredibly misunderstood story. In fact, the Complete Jewish Study Bible notes that this passage is "by far the most difficult passage of the Torah" for people to come to grips with.
In this chapter we're introduced to one of the names of God which is a "compound connection"...Jehovah Jireh: the God who Provides.
In the opening couple of verses we see a strange command from God to Abraham instructing him to take his son, Isaac, on a journey.
Isaac was the one that Abram and Sarah had waited so long for. Isaac was heir to all of the promises God had made.
What was God thinking?!?!
We see in verse 1 that God tested Abraham. He wanted to know where Abraham's heart and faith actually stood. Do we trust Him even if we are uncertain?
Keep in mind that God never has an evil or wrong motive or action in store for us. His tests are always for our good, always to grow us, and always so we can see His glory.
Tests in the Bible are to prove our faith, mature us, and prepare us for the next stage because a greater faith is required for what God has in store for us.
Notice how Abraham responds in verses 3 & 4. He didn't google directions. He never tried to bargain with God. He didn't talk it over with Sarah. He didn't bring a lamb along just in case. He simply obeyed!
What was Abraham thinking?
The answer is found in Hebrews 11:17-19
Abraham trusted God in this big issue because he had trusted God in many small issues over the years.
Sometimes God allows you to be in a situation that only He can solve so you and others will recognize that He is the one you need at that moment.
In Genesis 22:9-12 we see that God calls Abraham's name twice. He tells Abraham, "I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son from me."
It's at this point that God unveils His character once again (vv. 13-14)
Notice that Abraham didn't see the ram until he finished obeying God!
The whole time God was preparing the ram, bringing the ram, and offering the ram to Abraham and Isaac at just the perfect time.
We should breathe a sense of relief in the midst of life's testing and trials knowing that God is at work and will provide for us when He is ready.
The Lord will Provide - Jehovah Jireh

The root word for the name Jireh means "to see" but carries a meaning more than just to visually observe. It implies that God not only saw but fully intended to meet the need that He saw.
God saw the actions of Abraham's faith...he actually walked what he talked. God's provision for Abraham was based on the evidence of Abraham's faith.
When God asks you to do something in His Word, what is your response?
Delayed obedience or partial obedience is total disobedience.

God will Provide - Jehovah Jireh
God tests us and brings trials into our lives so that we will know Him better, grow in our faith, and show others a life that honors God.
You will never experience the amazing provisions of God until you start obeying Him simply, daily, passionately, and faithfully.
