Come Find Your Mercy | Breaking Barriers
Shame, one of the greatest enemies of the Gospel good news, tells us we're forgiven but still not worthy. Yet Jesus came that we might have life and have it to the full. Join us as we learn to trade the dark cloud of shame for living in the light of God's mercy.

Welcome to Mission Hills!
Mission Hills is a church family—a family who wants to extend to you the same love, hope, and joy that we have received. We know that we cannot be all things to all people. But we do want to be one thing to all people. We want to be the place where anyone, of any age, of any level of spiritual maturity, of any economic class, of any ethnicity, of any church background—or no church background—can meet God in a way that transforms their life…forever!

Shame is the persistent feeling that we're unworthy of loving and belonging.
Guilt says we've done wrong and we need forgiveness.
Shame says we need forgiveness but we'll probably never get it.

Four responses to the problem of Roman occupation:
· The Sadducees & tax collectors said the solution was to follow Rome.
· The Zealots said the solution was to fight Rome.
· The Essenes said the solution was to flee Rome.
· The Pharisees said the solution was faith.

The Pharisees’ mission was to enforce the rules.
Jesus’ mission was to offer a relationship with him.

The groups we identify with can be barriers to people we need to reach.
People have perceptions of groups and assumptions about everyone who identifies with those groups.
Refusing to identify with any group allowed Jesus to reach every group.
The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans." - John 4:9
Jesus extends friendship where shame tells us to expect animosity.
Shame keeps us from recognizing hope even when it’s right in front of us.
Jesus offered relationship before getting into the rules.
Are you going to reinforce the barriers or remove them?
Jesus opens doors where shame tells us to expect barriers.
Shame raises barriers. Jesus removes them.
Shame is the anti-Gospel, because it replaces barriers Jesus has removed.
1. What barriers is shame raising in my life?
2. Is there anywhere in my life where I’m doing shame’s work for it? Is there anywhere I’m creating barriers Jesus wants to tear down?
3. Who in my life probably expects animosity from me as a follower of Jesus and how can I surprise them with friendship?
