The Last Supper
A. Hour 24...
1. Judas fulfilled the prophecy. This was only one of over 300 Old Testament prophecies.
2. 30 pieces of silver was not a lot of money at that time. It was the exact amount of the compensation given to a master if his slave was gored by an ox. So, Jesus’ life was of no more value than the price of a slave!
3. Later, Judas regretted his choices.
B. Hour 23...
1. Jesus gave instructions to His disciples to prepare for Passover.
2. The Last Supper preparation was a preparation for the Seder meal. The Passover meal was a family celebration with Scripture and hymns that were sung. It was a reminder to the Jews that they had been spared from death and slavery. The Israelites had covered their doorposts with the blood of a spotless lamb and the death angel would pass over their houses. So the elements of the meal were all symbolic and a remembrance of their escape from Egypt. As Christians, they are a reminder to us of Christ’s fulfillment of the Old Covenant and a New Covenant.
a. There was bread called Matzoh. It was to be unleavened with stripes and to be pierced.
b. The bread was placed in a small bag with three chambers (Trinity). One remains in the bag that no one sees (Father). The second is broken (broken body of Christ). Half is placed back in the bag (the divinity of Christ) and the other half is wrapped in linen (the humanity of Christ). This portion wrapped in linen is then hidden and the children search for it.
c. The meat was lamb (the spotless lamb of God).
d. There were bitter herbs, horseradish today, that were a reminder of the slavery and inability to sacrifice and worship.
e. Charoset with apples, nuts, wine and spices, was a sweet reminder of redemption.
f. The hard-boiled eggs were a reminder of the mourners for the loss of the temple.
g. The 4 cups of wine were:
A Cup of Sanctification
A Cup of Judgment
A Cup of Redemption
A Cup of Praise
A Cup of Sanctification
A Cup of Judgment
A Cup of Redemption
A Cup of Praise
C. Hour 21...
1. Jesus knew His purpose.
2. Jesus knew His timing.
3. Jesus knew why He was there.
4. Jesus was willing to humble Himself to serve…no job too small, no job too dirty, no job beneath Him…He just came to serve.
D. Hour 20...
1. Jesus shared the meal with His disciples and shared the new symbolism.
2. Jesus foretold of His betrayal.
3. Jesus foretold of His denial.
4. Jesus foretold of His suffering and death.
E. What is your hour with Jesus?
1. Do you need to be reminded of what His sacrifice means to you?
2. Do you need to refresh your heart in a new and deeper way as you enter into communion?
3. Do you need to re-examine your thoughts of serving?
4. Have you been holding out for just the right opportunity to serve, or are you willing to take the least opportunity to serve while humbling yourself?
5. Will you seek for God to be glorified in your life, no matter where He takes you?
6. Do you need to begin a new life with Jesus by fully surrendering yourself to Him?
