II Kings 2:1-12
Used Mightily For God

Introduction
1. Would you like to be used mightily for God?
2. II Kings 2:1-12 we have two men who were mightily used of God (Elijah/Elisha). What are the characteristics of men mightily used by God?

Would you like to be used mightily for God? Characteristics:
I. COMMITMENT 2:2, 4, 6 (3,5)
Illus. 100’ up a high diver…is it commitment when he climbs the ladder? Is it commitment
when he stands on the board? Commitment comes when he dives. There is no way he
can retreat or return. There are vital key phrases in these verses.
A. To the Word 2, 4, 6 The Lord hath said to me.
1. This was true throughout his life (I Kgs. 17:2,5,8,14,16; 18:1,31; 19:0; 20:13,14,28,35,42; 21:17,19,28) The Word of the Lord…Thus saith the Lord
2.You get the idea. God speaks. Every time He speaks is an invitation to become involved with what He is doing. Every time in order to obey he had to adjust his life!
3.God is speaking today. Become involved in what He is doing. Adjustment will need to be made.
B. To the Walk 2, 4, 6
1. Order For the Lord hath sent me to Bethel (2) For the Lord hath sent me to Jericho (4) For the Lord hath sent me to Jordan.
2.Obedience So they went to Bethel (2) So they went to Jericho (4) So they two went to Jordan
*When God speaks are you willing to obey? Many say, “Tell me what you want me to do and I will tell you whether or not I want to do it.”
*How important it is to be sensitive to what God is saying! How do we know whether to follow since most do not have an audible voice? Confirmation: Through the Word, Prayer, Circumstances (open doors or shut doors), Godly people.
C. To the Warfare 3, 5
1. The warfare came from the very ones they came to instruct and
encourage…sons of the prophets. Knowest thou the Lord will take away thy
master…today?
2. Everyone knew Elijah would be going. Yet, how insensitive and hard were these words!
3.Yea, I know…hold your peace. “Turn back, don’t go on. You will have to go alone.”

Would you like to be used mightily for God? Characteristics:
II. CONSISTENCY 2:2, 4, 6, 7-9, 11
A. His Persistence 2, 4, 6
1. I will not leave thee 2, 4, 6
2.No matter what…many bail out. Jesus to his disciples: Will you also leave me? To whom shall we go that has the words of eternal life. This was Peter’s conclusion after meeting with Him, talking with Him, listening to Him.
3.Where can we go to find the words of eternal life?
B. His Power 2, 4, 6
1. As the Lord liveth…his God is alive!!
2.God is present. This is a God who is adequate and available.
3.I serve a risen Savior! Jesus is alive!!
C. His Performance 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11
1. No one cares how many storms you encountered…DID YOU BRING THE SHIP IN?
2.He had to follow through. It is easy to talk the talk. Do you walk the walk?

Would you like to be used mightily for God? Characteristics:
III. COURAGE 2:7, 8
A. Perspective to see…to get close!
50 men of the sons of the prophets, went to view afar off…
1.Some never get too close to what God is doing. They see from afar off.
2.They hear about what God is doing. They attend meetings and read manuals. They stand on the side lines but they never get in the game.
3.But…they stood by the Jordan River waiting to be active participants in what God was about to do.
4.“When the wind of heaven is blowing I want to make sure I have my sails up to catch the breeze!!”
B. Performance 8a Put God to the test
1.What does God desire? That’s why Elisha went 30-35 miles.
2.He struck the Jordan with his mantle. God does it: “they two went over on dry
ground” 2 not 50…just 2!
C. Participation 8 To get involved
1.“But you ain’t seen nothing yet”
2.We have a God that deals with exceedingly, abundantly, above all you can ask or think.
3.He wants to be involved in what we are doing!

Would you like to be used mightily for God? Characteristics:
IV. COMMUNICATION 2:9-11
A. Listen To The Voice of God 9a
Ask what I shall do for thee before I am taken away from thee.
1.What would you like God to do for you?
2.Watch how you answer. It will reveal your heart.
B. Learn From The Value of God 9b
1.I can’t go a step without you.
2.Everything in Elijah’s life was God doing it. It was all about Him!
3.I want you to have even more of me. Learn what only God can do.
C. Lean On The Vision From God 10, 11
This is a very difficult thing to do.
1.If you see me…v. 10
2.They walked and talked. Elijah was taken in a whirlwind accompanied with a chariot of fire and horses.
3.This was not only the way for Elijah to depart, it was a confirmation that a double portion of the spirit of Elijah would rest on Elisha. His Prominence…His Power…His Person…His Performance.
4.Don’t just see the flames. See the One behind the flames. See the One who can do the impossible.
5.Only He can do that which is mighty. We are merely lines. HE IS THE POWER!

Be humble that He would even visit us or use us at all.

STAND IN AWE OF HIM!
