Emotions : The Attributes of God (Wk2)
This four-week series will discuss God’s emotions—namely, his anger, mercy, love, and empathy. Through four different narratives found in the Gospels, we can see Jesus acting as his Father would and displaying unique attributes that we can both experience and extend as we live out the gospel.

Welcome to week 2 of Emotions. Again, we are not specifically dealing with our personal emotions, but rather are grasping onto the attributes of God’s emotion. One of my favorite things when it comes to God’s emotion is that it isn’t fleeting. It is pure, and we see that in Jesus’ response in some dynamic situations.

Why is that important?
John 5:19 Tells us...
So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
Big Idea: Jesus’ interaction with the woman caught in adultery, the men who brought her to him, and those watching point to his compassion for people—even when they have sinned against him.
1) It's A Trap

2) Own Your Part
(Write notes below)
3) His Mercy Works
(Write notes below)
Application Point: (As Christ Followers) We must live like a people who know God is always compassionate toward us, in turn extending the same compassion toward others.
Modern Day:
Trap- No one is worthy, so why waste my time
Own- We have no right to throw the first stone because we ourselves aren't without sin.
Mercy- The true Gospel is preaching of our standing, not our state. We are constantly reminded of our state (our afflictions) every day. But, we preach the finished work of Jesus (our standing).

What does Christ have to say?
And we can look at today’s scripture as a reference for that…
“Neither do I condemn you, now Go and SIN NO MORE…”

This is the essence of Salvation
-The trap is the understanding we are sinners but staying under the guise of condemnation.
-Own the reality of the fact that you have sinned, but you are not a sinner!
-In his mercy, share His mercy.

You may have messed up… but you aren’t a mess-up
You may have done drugs…but you aren’t a druggie.
You may have slept around…but you aren’t a slut.
You may have cheated…but you aren’t a cheater.
You may have become addicted to something…but you aren’t an addict.

DON’T OWN THE ENEMY’S LIE ABOUT YOUR IDENTITY! Take responsibility for the mistake without making it who you are!

When you accept Jesus… you are a son, you are a daughter of the King. This woman in our story today committed adultery, but Jesus didn’t label her as an adulteress. Even the bible says, “woman caught in the act of adultery.”

What you have done is not who you are! Why, God’s compassion is greater than your mistakes. That’s why there is joy at the coming home of the lost. They step out of what they have done into who they are.
