Jesus is Challenged

•Jesus’ IDENTITY is challenged
•Jesus’ COMMUNITY is challenged
•Jesus’ COMPASSION is challenged
The Identity of Jesus

Because he was God:

•Jesus could forgive sins (Mk. 2:5; Ps. 103:3)
•Jesus could interpret unspoken thoughts (2:8)
•Jesus could heal all diseases (2:9-12; Ps. 103:3)
The Community of Jesus

He CHOSE and he DIFFERENTIATED:

•He chose others based upon their potential not their past performance (2:14)

"Jesus gave Matthew a new purpose for his skills. When, he followed Jesus, the only tool from his past job that he carried with him was his pen. From the beginning, God made him a record keeper…the gospel that bears his name came as a result." The Life Application Bible

•He chose others who were more aware of their sinfulness than their successes (2:15)
The Community of Jesus

He CHOSE and he DIFFERENTIATED:

•He differentiated between true followers and those who only thought they were (Mk. 2:18-20)
•He differentiated between a message of good works and a message of God’s grace (2:20-22)

Mark 2:20 is the first indication in Mark that Jesus was fully aware of his mission. Jesus’ prediction here introduces a somber note that has been missing up to now in Mark’s account of miracles and controversies. It reminds us that joy and suffering are often two different sides of the same coin.
The Compassion of Jesus

•In his compassion, he noticed others who were in need (Mk. 3:1)
•In his compassion, he chose to serve those that others would only use (3:2-4)
•In his compassion, he would get involved with those in need at great risk to himself (3:5-6)
