Today we begin a new series for February and March entitled, "What's In a Name?"
The title comes from a line in the famous play Romeo and Juliet, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
Juliet naively thinks that names aren't or shouldn't be all that important, but in human reality, that is not the case.
Names convey identity, purpose, character, history, and can separate or bind us together.

He has chosen to reveal Himself to us by a variety of names that express some aspect of His greatness and goodness.
In the Bible, a name is seen as the equivalent of the nature and character of a person.
The various names of God help us know Him, grow in Him, and empower us to go for Him.

In Scripture, the word "name" appears more than 1,000 times and a great many of those are in reference to the Lord.
Here are a few of the more well-known passages where we read about God's name:
Exodus 3:13-15
Exodus 20:7
1 Samuel 12:22
Psalm 30:4
Micah 4:5

Each name of God is a special revelation or gift to us. They unveil areas of His specific attributes and character qualities.
One author has written, "when you discover the name of God that applies to your life situation, you will fully uncover the power, the protection, the privilege, the productivity, and the promises that come with that nature.
To know God as He has chosen to reveal Himself is a humbling experience. It should cause us to worship Him!
