I. An Honest Argument. (v. 23 They began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.)
A. A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. (Apparently this was a regular conversation for these guys.)
1. Luke 9:46-48 46 An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great."
2. Mark 9:33-35 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you discussing on the way?" But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, "If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
3. Matthew 20:20-21 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom."
4. Here, this argument is wildly inappropriate! Jesus had just announced to them that His body would be broken and His blood spilled.
B. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors.
C. But not so with you. (You are Not Like that) Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.”
