Ecclesiastes 1:2
““Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.””
What an encouraging way to start a sermon. Solomon is going to get right to it and let us know that there is nothing in life that makes it worth living. The word vanity is from the word hebel meaning a breeze, vapor, breath and is used 37 times in Ecclesiastes. Essentially life is fleeting. Before we get too discouraged though we must read on to verse 3...what profit has a man from all his labor in which he toils under the sun? Here we get the context of Solomon's thinking.
