Our English phrase “one another” actually comes from a single Greek word: allelon (ah-LAY-loan). This word appears in the New Testament 100 times in 94 verses. Of those, 47 give direct instructions to the church, such as:
…be at peace with one another (Mk 9:50)
…encourage one another and build one another up (1 Th 5:11)
…serve one another (Gal 5:13)
…love one another (Jn 13:34)
“The primary activity of the church was one-anothering one another.”
-Andy Stanley
Approximately 1/3 of the New Testament’s “one another” commands address the issue of unity. Some examples include:
Live in harmony with one another… (Rom 12:16)
Do not speak evil against one another… (Jas 4:11)
…so that there should be no division in the body…its parts should have equal concern for each other (1 Cor 12:25)
Why is it important to recognize the "one another" commands of Scripture are given to followers of Jesus rather than as a standard for all the world?

John 17:20-23

Why does Jesus desire unity for us?

Romans 12:5

1 Corinthians 12:12-13

Galatians 3:27-28

2 Corinthians 5:14-16

What sort of things influence how we see and evaluate others?
How does Scripture call us to a different standard?

Romans 15:5-7

Colossians 3:1-4

Colossians 3:5-11

Colossians 3:12-17

What practical steps do you need to take for these characteristics to be true in your life?
Such unity is only possible because of Jesus and when our eyes are on Jesus.

Romans 3:22-24

“As in any human relationship, unity cannot be forced. There can be no bullying, no manipulation. But in a divided world, where the divisions have often run down so-called ‘religious’ lines, there is no excuse for Christians not to work afresh in every generation toward the unity Jesus prayed for. If we are, essentially, one in faith, there can be no final reason why we may not be one, also, in our life and worship.”
-N.T. Wright

BENEDICTION:
As a prisoner of the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:1-6, NIV)
