Why This “We Believe” series?
1 Peter 3:15 ESV
14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,
15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
1: In order that Jesus followers will be CONFIDENT in the foundations of their faith and so that they will be able to GIVE REASONS for their HOPE.
2: So that non-Christians may know the core tenants of the Christian faith and how they might come into a personal relationship with God.
What You Need to Know about the Apostles Creed with Regard to this Series:
1: The Apostle’s Creed reflects core Christian truths found in the Bible but the creed is not authoritative.
2: The Apostles Creed is used to teach the gospel foundations and protect us from error
2 Timothy 1:13 ESV
Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
3: Memorizing or reciting the creed will not make you a Christian
Romans 10:9-10 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
What Does the Apostle’s Creed Say?
I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit; born of the Virgin Mary;
Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven; and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
From whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit;
The holy catholic church, the communion of saints;
The forgiveness of sins;
The resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.
What Do We Mean When We Say “I Believe”?
1: “I Believe” means more than “I have an opinion”. “I Believe” means we have a confident trust and faith in the truth revealed to us in the Scriptures (the Bible) regarding these things.
*** Hebrews 11:1-6 ESV
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
2 For by it the people of old received their commendation.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
2: “I Believe” means I have a Faith Commitment to God that is Demonstrated by Obedience
Matthew 7:21 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
James 2:14-17 ESV
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
