Luke 2:41-52

In this passage of God’s Word we see Mary and Joseph go through an extremely stressful time: for three days, they think they’ve lost Jesus! By taking a closer look at this story though, we can learn how to deal with the seasons of our lives when it feels like what God is doing stresses us out. We learn that we have to remember:

1. God is still working, and He hasn’t abandoned us
Luke 2:48-49, 2 Tim. 2:13, 1 Cor. 1:9, Num. 23:19, Lam. 3:22-23

2. It’s ok to not know what God is doing
Luke 2:50-51, Heb. 11:1, Ps. 46:10, Mark 5:36, 2 Cor. 5:7

3. When God stretches us, He does so intentionally
Luke 2:41-47, James 1:2-3, 12, Rom. 8:18, 28, 2 Cor. 1:3-4
Reflection Questions

1. After taking a look at Mary and Joseph’s story here in chapter 2 of the Gospel of Luke, what stands out to you the most? If you’re familiar with the story, did you notice anything that you haven’t noticed before?

2. Mary and Joseph undoubtably would have felt very stressed and frantic by what Jesus chose to do by staying back in Jerusalem and then not being able to find Him for 3 days. Have you ever felt stressed out by what God has done before? Why? What impact did that have on your faith?

3. After Jesus answered His parents’ questions about what had happened, it says that they did not understand His answers. Yet in spite of this, God’s Word says that Mary treasured up all these things in her heart. How do you think she did this? Have you ever received an answer from God that you didn’t understand? Was your response like Mary’s? How did your response impact your relationship with God?

4. Reading and studying this story from God’s Word can help us to realize the importance of preparing for times when we do not fully understand what God is doing in our lives. What practical step(s) can you take to strengthen your faith now so that when something happens (like what happened to Mary and Joseph in this passage of Scripture), your default response causes your relationship with the Lord to be strengthened instead of being damaged? Who will keep you accountable to that?

In-Person Service Update

Thank you for your continual faithfulness and flexibility during these times. We especially appreciate those 8+ years old wearing their mask when not seated 6+ feet away from those outside of their household. Please remember, no offering plates will be passed; instead we ask you to give online or via the giving box near the gym entrance. Tables are set up in the back row of the gym for families with young children. We also kindly ask you to use the restroom before you come to ensure that our restrooms are as clean as possible for those who need to use them.
