Description: Many rulers and kings have special titles. Especially distinguished royalty may some times have absurdly long titles describing their many attributes, honors, and accomplishments. In Isaiah 9, Isaiah tells us that the King God is sending into the world will have His own list of titles. We can tell right off the bat that this King is different. Rather than puffing Himself up, each of the King's titles describe what He will do and provide for His people. A King is coming, His name will be Immanuel, and He will be given for us. We know now that this King is Jesus, and Isaiah's prophecy tells us that He will be our wonderful counselor. His counsel is wonderful indeed, if we will receive it!
Many kings in the ancient world were given extravagant royal titles. Consider Pharaoh Thutmose III of Egypt, who was called:
- Mighty Bull, Arising in Thebes
- Enduring in Kingship like Re in heaven
- Powerful of strength, sacred of appearance
- Enduring of form
- Son of Ra, Thutmose, beautiful of forms

What is unique about the royal titles given to Jesus? Each of Jesus' titles describe what He will be FOR US!
1. Jesus will be wonderful for us
Wonderful - Hebrew "Pele (peh-lay)"
Meaning a miracle or marvel. Something that causes amazement or astonishment. A thing which causes an intense sense of awe or is of supernatural quality.

2. Jesus will astound us with wonderful counsel.
Wonderful in what it says
Wonderful in what it imparts
Wonderful in what it reveals
Wonderful in what it brings about
3. Jesus offers us an alternative to the self-counseled life
The rallying cry of the self-counseled life:
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
- William Ernest Henley, "Invictus"

4. The wonderful counsel of Jesus must be RECEIVED
How does Jesus counsel us?
- He counsels us through His Word
- He counsels us in prayer
- He counsels us through the mediating presence of the Holy Spirit
- He counsels us in community
- He counsels us through His Word
- He counsels us in prayer
- He counsels us through the mediating presence of the Holy Spirit
- He counsels us in community
Every believer needs to be connected at three levels of discipleship
that are modeled in the life of Christ:
100 - your CONGREGATION
12 - your COMMUNITY
3 - your COMPANIONS

One Big Thing: RECEIVE His counsel and be ASTOUNDED
